Welcome to Abuse & Neglect Prevention, the seventh course in the series The Role of the School Counselor.

preventing neglect and abuse

The number of children who die from mistreatment every year in the United States is shocking, and it is on the rise. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reported a seven percent increase in child abuse fatalities in 2016. Over 1,700 children died as a direct result of mistreatment, compared to 1,589 during the previous year. Some estimates place the actual number of abuse-related deaths almost 30% higher.

This course examines the mandated reporting requirements of abuse and neglect, including strategies and techniques for identifying the various types of abuse, and signs of suspected abuse. The difference between confidentiality and privileged communication is defined, as well as the duty to warn of threatened harm and the legal issues regarding limits to confidentiality

This course should take 10-16 hours of study time to complete all assignments and the reflection questions as directed. There are three written assignments including the reflection questions at the end of the course.
